\nThe Dialogues Series explores the converns, careers and contexts of some of India\u2019s most acclaimed artists. Each book in the series takes the form of an extended conversation between an individual artist and the authors, Ranjit Hoskote and Nancy Adajania, two of India\u2019s best known and most authoritative critics. The Dialogues Series provies sharply etched portraits of the artists and critically engaged accounts of their work. It sees each artist\u2019s journey in review, with its distinctive transitions, breakthroughs and evolutionary rhythms. The Dialogues Series also situates the imagination and lifeworld of the artists within larger art-historical genealogies, cultural narratives and political discussions, both Indian and global. The Series aims to create a discursive space in which both enthusuasts and scholars can reflect on the arguments that art and criticism conduct with history. The series is founded on the belief that the history of art does not simply revolve around the personalities of individual artists or the trends of the day; it also records the vital historical and pholosophical questions that are posed and played out on the contested terrain of art.<\/p>\n

\nBaiju Parthan<\/strong> (born Kottayam, 1956) took a BSc in botany and enrolled for a diploma in civil engineering in Kerala before switching tracks midway and joining the Goa College of Art in 1978. He spent eight years in Goa, socialising with artists as well as musicians, and coming into contact with the hippie subculture. To these years and circles, he owes his lifelong interest in, and his extensive knowledge of, mysticism, philosophy, mythology and para-psychology. In 1986, Parthan shifted base to Mumbai, which became his home. From 1987 to 1993, he worked with the Times of India group as an editorial artist, contributing to the Illustrated Weekly of India, Science Today,<\/em> and the Times Sunday Review<\/em>. In the early 1990s, having held his first solo exhibitions, Parthan resigned his job and embarked on a career as an independent artist. Over the last two decades, he has shown extensively in India and overseas, with the Vadehra Art Gallery (New Delhi), Aicon Gallery (New York), The Guild, Art Musings and the Fine Art Company (Mumbai). His work has also been shown in the context of numerous curated exhibitions, including ‘Under Construction’, co-curated by Ranjit Hoskote (Japan Foundation Asia Center, Tokyo, 2002), ‘Capital & Karma’, curated by Angelika Fitz and Michael W\u00f6rg\u00f6tter (Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, 2002), ‘ZOOM!’, curated by Nancy Adajania and Luis Serpa (Culturgest Museum, Lisbon, 2004), and ‘Along the X-axis’, curated by Pooja Sood (Apeejay Media Gallery, New Delhi, 2004). Parthan leads several parallel lives. While working as a painter and intermedia artist, Parthan has also pursued his academic interests, taking a post-graduate diploma in contemporary mythology and a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Mumbai. Being deeply involved in the world of computer programming, he has also trained in advanced techniques in 3-D graphics, animation, Java and Flash.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
